Information
This project is a vinyl design for the concept Renaissance Live Album by Beyoncé. It was created for the elective course Image Two, which focused on student-driven, image-making design processes. The brief for this project was to create an image-dominant cover and backing for a vinyl of your choosing, including all necessary assets. The design needed to effectively scale across various formats and pair with typography, capturing the essence of the album while remaining functional and visually striking.
Renaissance by Beyoncé is a symbolic and impactful album in her discography, marking the reclamation of house music for underrepresented artists in POC and LGBTQ+ spaces. Its overall aesthetic is a twisted, futuristic, and metallic take on the idea of a modern renaissance. The album’s themes of freedom, self-expression, and transformation were carried through the stage design and costume choices during the tour. Beyoncé opened the tour stepping out of metallic armor, with screens behind her displaying metal frameworks mimicking gothic architecture—blending the old and the new in a powerful visual narrative.
My early sketches drew heavily from gothic architecture motifs and futuristic aesthetics, focusing on the fashion, color palettes, and key visual elements fans associate with this era. I was particularly inspired by the bold, metallic textures seen throughout the tour, as well as the radical, boundary-pushing themes of the album. I ultimately chose to focus on a highly radial pattern from one of the sections of the show. I continued the development through hand-drawn illustrations and digital refinement, ensuring the design stayed true to the themes of empowerment and futuristic glamour, while maintaining a connection to the rich history of artistic and architectural movements that influenced Beyoncé’s vision. The final design balanced complexity with simplicity, creating a striking and memorable image that speaks to the album’s bold aesthetic.
